How To Eliminate Credit Card Debt

Credit card debt is one of those phrases you never want to hear associated with your name. Unfortunately, for various financial reasons, for many people the need to borrow money and spend on your credit card is essential.

Of course with loans on credit cards comes the need to legally eliminate credit card debt, and one of the common questions is how to do this. As you'll probably know the interest rates associated with borrowing from many credit card companies is huge so the sooner you can begin paying off the debt, the better.

By searching for ways to eliminate credit card debt you are already half way to your goal. Many people take a 'head in the sand' attitude where they try and forget about a debt in the hope that it will go away. You know as well as I do that this is not the case, and taking action to pay off the debt on your credit card needs to be dealt with. It is equally important to stick to your decision to eliminate your loan and not just to look into doing so but never taking action.

The first thing that you should be doing is putting together a plan of action. You need to analyze what your current financial situation is in terms of credit card debt and your other finances, both in current terms and in future predictions. This is a simple step and can be carried out with a notepad. Write down the amount of debt that you have on your credit card or credit cards if you have several, along with the APR (Annual Percentage Rate) that you are paying on each of them. This will give you a clear idea of how far you are in debt in total.

Now that you know the total amount you can then begin to look into the amount that you can realistically pay off immediately or in the near future. This could be from your savings or bank account or any other money that you have available. Of course you will also need to consider the amount of money that you need to live on (bills, food, mortgage payments, etc). You will hopefully find that you have money that you can use to partially eliminate your credit card debt, but before you go ahead and do so it is essential that you pay it off logically.

Decide what the best way is to pay off your debts

Rather than haphazardly paying off any of your credit cards, a sensible approach is to eliminate the debt from the highest APR bank card. This is the card that is costing you the most in annual charges and should be dealt with first. The credit card with the next highest APR needs to be eliminated next, and so-on. Some credit cards may be charging you late fees in addition to APR, so if this is true it is a good idea to reserve money to cover the minimum payments on these. Stick to this plan until all of your debts on each card are eliminated.

This is only a simple introduction to eliminating credit card debt. You may however find that other methods need to be sought. Credit card debt consolidation is one option, but no matter which methods you decide are best for your current financial situation, it is imperative that spending habits are controlled so that you do not add to your current debt.
